The next story Dolan will tackle in comic form is that of Ned Kelly. Reg wanted his own farm when he retired from the army as a captain, but was denied access to the Soldier Settlement Scheme that was assigning plots of land on his own mission to white soldiers. The book also doesn't ignore the realities of life as an Indigenous soldier. "He was capable and fit, but he also had that vision of what had to be done next, how to do it and take everyone along with you." The drawings, art directed by Dolan, are as accurate as possible, often based on photos. What set him apart? "There's a term called 'having your shit in a sock', which means they have everything to hand," Dolan says. ![]() Some of them would have been outraged by it, no doubt about it, but by halfway through the course, he's promoted to sergeant which means he's leading them." The first thing he would have faced was typical prejudice as these young Australians had to share with a black man. "You can imagine an Indigenous soldier in an Australian barracks in 1940. Threlfall suggested Reg Saunders as a good subject for the next one, and Dolan was captivated by his story. His first graphic novel was Gallipoli: The Landing, published late last year.
